Voltage Collapse Prediction and Prevention in Power Systems using MATLAB

Abstract

In this paper Voltage Collapse Proximity Index (VCPI) method is discussed. Voltage Collapse Proximity Index method is used to evaluate the voltage stability of various buses connected in a complex power system. This method is useful in predicting the conditions which can lead to voltage instability. In this work the effectiveness of the VCPI is tested through Power system analysis toolbox (PSAT). PSAT (Power System Analysis Toolbox) is a matlab toolbox used for both static and dynamic analysis and control. In this paper, VCPI algorithm is discussed and simulation & analysis of a 6-bus system and an IEEE 14-bus system under disturbances such as load throw-off and line tripping is presented. Using the load flow results which are obtained with the help of PSAT, the VCPI is calculated for all the buses and analyzed. The results thus obtained authenticates that VCPI is a simple and flexible method for determining the stability of the large interconnected power system.
