Abstract

A reliable and economical/green microgrid is the major focus area of the modern power system. These are operating as controllable system either singly in isolated mode or collectively in grid connected mode. The reliability of the microgrid is a major concern which is threatened by the load fluctuations and intermittent renewable energy penetration. This paper presents the frequency stabilization in a microgrid under solar penetration and load fluctuation. This microgrid frequency stabilization is based on model predictive controller (MPC). The battery energy storage (BES) with charging/discharging and its controlled state of charge (SoC) is used for primary frequency control. The frequency prediction is also carried out in order to enhance the performance of the MPC controller. A comparison between the PI controller and MPC is made for frequency deviation in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results depict the effectiveness of the MPC in frequency stabilization.
